Course Number: SC04

Camera Image Quality Analysis from HW/SW/Tuning Specifications to Final Image Quality
Instructors: Hervé Macudzinski and Laurent Chanas, DXOMARK IMAGE LABS
Level: Intermediate
Duration: 4 Hours plus 30-minute break and 30-minute post-class discussion
Course Date/Time:

San Francisco: Thursday 13 January, 07:00 - 12:00
New York: Thursday 13 January, 10:00 - 15:00
Paris: Thursday 13 January, 16:00 - 21:00
Tokyo: Friday 14 January, 00:00 - 05:00

Benefits
This course enables the attendee to:

  • Understand the difference between measuring camera module properties using RAW images and the full camera quality using JPG files.
  • Learn how to measure the physical properties of a camera module using RAW images.
  • Learn how to measure the global image quality of a camera using the final RGB images.
  • Learn how to create a measurement protocol of a camera.

Course Description
Image quality is the combination of hardware, ISP, software, system integration and tuning. Engineers need to understand camera capabilities from hardware component to the full system in order to provide the best compromise to the final users. In this course we describe how to evaluate both and explain the impact of each metric on the image pipeline.

  • Camera hardware capabilities evaluation.
  • Benefits of using RAW image for sensor and lens evaluation.
    • Sensor and lens evaluation: link between image measurement and pixel physical properties.
    • Final image quality evaluation
  • Methodology and metrics
    • Texture and noise case study
    • Protocol, measurements and metrics descriptions
    • Overview of the camera improvement and its results over the past decade

Intended Audience
Image scientists, engineers, and technicians involved in the design and evaluation of image quality of cameras.

Hervé Macudzinski is an expert in image quality and started his career as a research engineer for DXOMark™ Analyzer. He designed the DXOMark Sensor protocol score and worked on the DXOMark Lens protocol (launched in 2010 on dxomark.com). He initiated the prototype of the DXOMark Mobile protocol in 2012 and then took the lead of the DXOMark Mobile team developing multiple new protocol for front camera, video conference, drone.

Laurent Chanas graduated from the engineering school ENSEA and received his PhD in image processing  at University of Cergy-Pontoise France (2001). For 14 years he was R&D image science engineer and head of the calibration and image quality measurement laboratory at DxO. He is now Product Owner of Analyzer Product at DXOMARK since 2017, developing software and hardware solutions for the image quality evaluation.
