Color Science and Engineering Systems, Technologies and Applications

 A Week Focused on Color

Join us for a week of color-related courses, workshops, paper presentations, exhibits, and interesting conversations around technical topics and application areas related to color!

This year we will hold two tracks of short courses on Monday, four tracks on Tuesday until mid-afternoon, followed by workshops, then three full days of keynote talks and technical papers.

Get your submissions ready, consider sharing your expertise through a short course or workshop, help us get the word out, and prepare for a great week in Paris! We're looking forward to seeing you and enjoying an excellent conference together.

 Conference Topics

Technical papers are invited in, but not limited to, the following:

Color Perception: Visual adaptation, visual psychophysics, color blindness, inter-observer differences, salience and attention, psychological effects of color, spatial and temporal color vision, color semiotics, color harmony, memory color, animal color vision

Capture, Display, and Print: Image capture, 360° capture, color imaging sensing, multi-modal capture, multi-primary displays, mobile color imaging, special effects color printing, multi-ink printing, high dynamic range (HDR) color imaging, pseudo-color and data visualization, color imaging workflows

Material Appearance and Color: Material capture, appearance reproduction, and modeling (gloss, translucence, etc.), color 3D printing, color in 3D, 3D CAD modeling, 3D scanning, spatial color models, computer generated imagery (CGI)

Color in Illumination and Lighting: Color rendering, color mixing, light projection, metamerism, multi-illumination imaging, atmosphere, quality of light

Color Theory: Color science, colorimetry, uniform color spaces, expanded color spaces, color difference, color appearance models, color constancy, color modeling, color distribution in the universe, color and psychophysics

Image Quality: Image quality, color image processing, color gamut mapping, computational imaging, color difference metrics, color preference, color fidelity

Multispectral Imaging: Spectral image capture, processing and analysis, spectral image quality, spectral image visualization, display and reproduction, spectral optimization of imaging systems, spectral image applications

Specific Color Applications: Cultural heritage applications, color in cinema and broadcast video, AR/VR/MR (augmented, virtual, and mixed reality), user interfaces, computer graphics, computer vision, video games, medical and dental imaging, biomedical prosthetics, security applications, camouflage, automotive applications, paints, coatings, nano-materials

Option 1: Conference Proceedings Papers 
Submission Deadline: 7 April 2019
Final papers are due in electronic format by 3 September, 2019.

 Call for Workshops and Short Courses

CIC27 workshops take place the afternoon of Tuesday, October 22 and are scheduled for 2.5 hours.

Submissions for workshop topics should be sent to Please put “CIC27 Workshop Proposal” and your last name in the subject line. Topics should be of timely interest and might include subjects related to cultural heritage applications; artistic photography and photo printing; cinema; AR/VR/MR (augmented, virtual, and mixed reality); 360° capture; machine learning; material appearance; temporal color perception; gaming; medical applications, or any other subject included in the conference topics. Please include a general description of the topic to be covered, the format of the workshop (i.e., short papers; panel discussion; hands-on; etc.), and list of confirmed or potential speakers/moderators. Workshop proposals are due 7 April 2019.

Short Courses
CIC27 short courses take place Monday October 21 and Tuesday, October 22 and range from 2-4 hours in length.

Submissions for short courses topics should be sent to Please put “CIC27 Short Course Proposal” and your last name in the subject line. Your proposal should include the following:

  • Title
  • Course level (introductory, intermediate, advanced)
  • Description: please describe in a manner to attract a potential student’s attention and entice them to take the class; max 150 words
  • List of 3-5 Benefits that answers “attendees will be able to . . ."
  • Intended audience
  • Biography of instructor(s); max 75 words

Topics should be of fundamental or timely interest covering subjects related to the conference topics. Short Course proposals are due 7 April 2019.

Call for Contributions

 The  Venue: Paris

France’s beautiful capital hosts CIC27. Details on the event venue and lodging options will be posted here as they become available and will be found in the preliminary program, which will be released in late June 2019.

Lodging: Details will be released in Summer 2019; check here for the latest information.

Travel: Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) also known as Roissy Airport serves Paris. There are also numerous train options serving destinations all over Europe.

Workshops: CIC27 workshops will take place Tuesday afternoon, October 22. Please plan to attend these complementary additions to the program. More information is found under the list of conference and workshop topics.

Short Courses: The conference offers an extensive array of classes taught by world-renowned experts, including the one-day intensive Color, Vision, and Basic Colorimetry. If you are interested in teaching a class on Monday or Tuesday, October 21 or 22, please contact

Demonstration Session: Authors are invited to participate in the demonstration session where they showcase software, hardware, samples of materials produced, etc. related to their oral or interactive paper topic(s).

CIC Exhibit/Sponsorship: The CIC Exhibit, held Wednesday and Thursday, October 23 and 24, provides an opportunity to highlight your company to an audience of world-class color systems experts. Release of Preliminary Conference Program: Summer 2019.


Conference registration includes: admission to all technical sessions, CIC workshops, coffee breaks, exhibit, Welcome Reception, Conference Reception, evening lecture, and a proceedings abstract book + full papers on USB flash drive. Separate registration fees are required for short courses.

To better serve you, IS&T is offering conference registration options that include membership (new or renewals). Register for just the conference OR register for the conference plus IS&T membership, with your choice of an online subscription to the Journal of Imaging Science and Technology (JIST) or Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI).
