  • Gain understanding of the structure of International Standards work and documents and be able to decipher the coded language that is used.
  • Become acquainted with the International Standards relevant to Photography.

Course Description: The course  outlines how you can play a part in the International Standards process and why you  want to be a participant. It uses a number of example photographic topics that are generally and specifically focussed on the theme of Archiving. The examples cover both physical and digital image formats, and  examines the existing and emerging technologies that can be facilitated by the process. It  also illustrates how participation can be a positive learning experience, in particular for early career workers.

Intended Audience: The course requires no prior understanding of the work of International Standards. As such it is intended for those who are looking for an introduction to the topic and as a resource to allow them to access the International Standards process and documents. It is particularly applicable to those early in their careers as it will bring out some of the learning opportunities. It has been tailored for those working with both hard copy and digital images as the examples range across the whole range of Photography. As such it is applicable to a range of job functions.

Alan Hodgson has 15 years experience in International Standards as a technical expert, project leader, working group convenor, committee chair and head of national delegations. He is currently Chair of ISO Technical Committee 42 (Photography). If you are unsure what any of these roles mean, this is the course for you. He is a Past President of the IS&T and was Archiving short course chair in 2008.
