Color Gamut Mapping

SC17

UPDATED: Color Gamut Mapping
Instructor: Jan Morovic, HP Inc.
Level: Introductory
Duration: 2 Hours
Course Time:
     New York: 26 October 2021, 12:45 - 15:00
     Paris: 26 October 2021, 18:45 - 21:00
     Tokyo: 27 October 2021, 01:45 - 04:00

Prerequisites: Knowledge of the fundamentals of colorimetry, color appearance, and color management is assumed.

Benefits:
Attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the theory of color reproduction.
  • Identify the role and position of color gamut mapping in color reproduction.
  • Evaluate the performance of a color gamut mapping solution.
  • Choose from among the multitude of existing gamut mapping approaches.
  • Trace a color's progress through a color reproduction workflow, with particular emphasis on the gamut mapping stage.
  • Consider future trends in color gamut mapping.

Course Description
Because different color reproduction media reproduce different ranges (gamuts) of colors, not all colors can be matched with all imaging devices. Reproducible colors therefore need to be found for all original colors, which is the role of gamut mapping. This course is based on the instructor's Color Gamut Mapping book and on recent advances in the field. It introduces color reproduction, makes the role of gamut mapping explicit, discusses how gamut mapping is implemented in commercial color management systems, and sketches out the variety of gamut mapping solutions proposed over the last forty years. Understanding the nature of gamut mapping provides a basis for making informed decisions about it when setting up color reproduction solutions.

Intended Audience: scientists, engineers, and creative content creators either designing or working with systems that reproduce color image content in various media; students in courses involving color and imaging components.

Jan Morovic received a PhD in color science from the University of Derby (1998), where he then worked as a lecturer in color reproduction. Since 2003 he has been at HP Inc., leading the color roadmap of the Designjet, Latex, and Stitch product lines. He holds 113 granted US patents and has authored more than 100 papers and the Color Gamut Mapping book published as part of the IS&T/Wiley Series. He also served as director of CIE Division 8.
