Course Description: The course identifies ways to address imaging variability, which is part of any digital collection, for workflow improvement. There are several sources for the variation in imaging performance, including capture and lighting equipment, many of which can be mitigated. This course explores how knowledge of the sources of variation can be used to improve performance where needed. For example, the selection, use, and monitoring of imaging test charts is discussed. This leads to recommendations for tolerancing, and where 'just passing' may not be the right strategy.

Intended Audience: Managers, engineers, and technicians responsible for evaluating and monitoring scanner and camera performance, and emerging guidelines. An understanding of imaging technology, and how performance is measured is assumed.

Don Williams is founder of Image Science Associates, a digital imaging consulting and software group. He has worked for several large cultural heritage institutes in practical implementation of image quality controls and is the prime architect for the GoldenThread image quality evaluation tools. He has taught short courses for many years and contributes to several imaging standards activities.

Peter Burns is a consultant working in digital image evaluation, system monitoring, and image processing. A frequent presenter, he has experience in several areas of imaging: digital photography, mobile imaging, cultural heritage.
