Week of October 3: ICAI 2021

Printing for Fabrication 2021 technical registrants have full access to the 5-day International Conference on Advanced Imaging 2021 (ICAI). Attendees may watch the talks live and/or view recordings. The conference language is English. When you view the ICAI Program please note that live presentation times are for Tokyo, Japan. Access to the live presentations and the recordings will be via the Print4Fab 2021 Conference Portal.

Week of October 10: Print4Fab 2021

  • All talks are presented live, with real-time text commenting and live Q&A.
  • Sessions occur over two days, ~10:00-15:00 and 19:00-23:30 NY time, to allow most people to attend at least some sessions live, no matter where they live in the world.
  • Technical sessions are recorded and made available within ~24-hours, giving you the ability to listen to talks when it suits your schedule and/or to go back to review details. The recordings are available for at least four months post-event.
  • Print4Fab and ICAI share four joint keynote talks, allowing the two communities to get to know each other better.
  • Participate in an international event without leaving home.

Development of a Film Cleaning System That Enables Film Reuse and Recycling, Kazuo Satomi, Japan Printing Machinery Association (Japan) Even in the shrinking printing market, film printing for food packaging and other applications is on the rise. At the same time, the accumulation of waste plastics that cannot be recycled, incinerated, or exported and their disposal is a challenge not only for Japan, but also for the global ecosystem. This talk discussed the development of a system to remove ink from the huge amount of waste plastic used for test printing in plastic printing factories, reuse it as test printing film, and eventually recycle it.

The Status and Trends of ASEAN Printing Industry and its Challenges Aran Hansuebsai, Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) The printing industry is changing rapidly and is threatened by several factors such as information and digital technology. This threat provides an opportunity in that "printed" products can be diversified by new processes derived from these "threats". Sustainability, energy, and environmental issues will increasingly dominate the economic and social agenda of the 21st century and will be the driving force of a new industrial revolution as well. Nowadays most printing companies are likely to move towards more knowledge-intensive processes of production. This talk reports on the status and trends of the printing industry in ASEAN countries. Weakness and success factors are discussed, including printing education in this region. It questions how printers can survive in competitive markets, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic.

MXene Inks Replace Metals and Carbon in Printed Electronics?, Yury Gogotsi, Drexel University (US) Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides known as MXenes (more than 50 compositions are currently available) exhibit high metallic conductivity (up to 20,000 S/cm), catalytic, plasmonic, reversible redox, and other useful properties. This presentation provides an overview of MXene synthesis and properties, as well as aqueous and organic MXene ink formulations. Examples of extrusion printing, inkjet printing, and screen printing on various substrates, including paper, textiles, and polymers, is provided. Due to their versatile chemistry and facile processability, MXenes are promising candidates for the next generation of printed devices such as interconnects, electrodes for batteries and supercapacitors, antennas, and sensors.

Inkjet based Direct Printing Methods for Non-flat Surfaces, Kye-Si Kwon, Soonchunhyang University (Republic of Korea) Direct to shape printing on non-flat surfaces is the preferred method for packaging industries, such as bottle and can printing. Such direct printing methods are more efficient than indirect printing methods, and thus are extending their use to non-graphic applications. This presentation discusses direct printing methods for various applications of non-flat surface printing, such as beauty lenses and printed electronics applications. In particular, this talk covers how to apply high-viscosity inks to various geometries using numerous printing methods, such as near-field electrospinning, continuous inkjet, and needle-type dispensers, to meet a variety of industrial requirements.

This presentation provides an overview of MXene synthesis and properties, as well as aqueous and organic MXene ink formulations. Yury Gogotsi is director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute, Distinguished University Professor, and Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University. He received his BS/MS (1984, metallurgy) and PhD (1986, physical chemistry) from Kiev Polytechnic and a DSc degree from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1995). He works on 2D carbides and nitrides (MXenes), and their applications in energy, environmental protection, electronics, and medicine.

Kye-Si Kwon (권계시) is a professor at Soonchunhyang University in Korea in the department of mechanical engineering (inkjet.sch.ac.kr). After his PhD, obtained from KAIST, Korea (1999), he was a member of research staffs in companies such as Samsung and LG Electronics. He joined Soonchunhyang University in 2006 where his teaching and research is centered on inkjet-related measurement methods and system developments. In 2012, Kwon spent one year at Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in Palo Alto, California, as a visiting researcher. He also established a start-up company and served as CEO of PS. Co. Kazuo Satomigraduated university in 1984. After working in sales for the media industry at Fujitsu Kogyo Limited (Fujitsu Japan), he moved to Creo Japan (Kodak Japan) in 2002 and was engaged in business development for gravure printing and newspaper printing and was made a director in 2012. He has been executive managing director of Japan Machinery Association since 2018.
