Printing technologies continue to evolve in fidelity, throughput, and reliability. The advances made in the print eco-system to enable single-pass applications that readily compete with short and long-run conventional techniques are a clear success story of the combined effort of fundamental understanding and interaction of the various disciplines and researchers. This progress not only aids the production of high-quality color prints but also enables the outreach of printing into a vast number of novel fields, where printing applies highly-specialized nanomaterials to create novel functionalities.

With the convergence of the tooling used for graphical, mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, IS&T’s Printing for Fabrication Conference provides a forum for experts to exchange, discuss, and advance the understanding of the vast space of printing and the challenges shared by the different approaches. With the groundwork being laid by the fundamentals of printing, materials, and processes, this year’s conference highlights the developments in inkjet, digital textile, printed electronics, and 3D additive manufacturing and its scalability.

A special feature of this year’s event is Frontiers in Imaging: Digital Printing for Fabrication, a day-long session of invited talks that looks at state-of-the-art in imaging applications related to health, well-being, leisure, and work life and the challenges that need to be overcome to take these applications to the next level.

To extend the value of our time in the Bay Area, on Thursday we are offering tours to three local companies working in the digital printing for fabrication sphere: FUJIFILM Dimatix, HP Inc., and Jabil.

As in previous years, there are plenty of opportunities to discuss and network, enabling everyone to interact with the other experts and application developers. In addition to the conference program have we a selected set of specialized short courses that provide in-depth information on some of the crucial science behind printed fabrication technologies.

History

Held for the first time in 1981, NIP became an annual conference in 1988. With the exception of the first year when it was held in Venice, Italy, and 1993, when it was held in Yokohama, Japan, NIP has rotated to various cities throughout North America.

Prior to being spun off into a "stand-alone" collocated meeting in 2005, Digital Fabrication was a technical session within NIP. Held for the first time in 2005, it has been an annual conference ever since.

Scope

For more than 30 years, NIP has been the leading forum for discussion of advances and new directions in non-impact and digital printing technologies. A comprehensive, industry-wide conference, this meeting includes all aspects of the hardware, materials, software, images, and applications associated with digital printing systems, including drop-on-demand ink jet, wide format ink jet, desktop and continuous ink jet, toner-based electrophotographic printers, production digital printing systems, and thermal printing systems, as well as the engineering capability, optimization, and science involved in these fields.

Digital Fabrication explores the potential of digital printing technologies with sessions on new applications and materials that go well beyond traditional printing. Digital fabrication techniques have been used for biomedical applications, as well as to produce MEMS and new electronic devices. Conference topics include 2D & 3D functional printing and micromachining; digital fabrication instrumentation; ink jet printing processes; laser patterning processes, direct-write, and integration in printing manufacturing lines; process materials and substrates for digital fabrication; nano-patterning and imprint technologies; prototyping technology; printed sensors, photovoltaic cells, lighting devices, biomaterials, architectural components and electronics and devices; and industrial and commercial digital fabrication.
