Designing and Managing an Outsourced Digital Imaging Project

SC15

Instructor: David Walls, US Government Publishing Office
Level: Introductory
Duration: 2 hours
Course Date/Time: Monday, June 19 3:45 PM - 5:45 PM

Benefits:
This course enables the attendee to:

  • Become knowledgeable in the processes of designing and managing an outsourced digital imaging project.
  • Develop a criterion for what needs to be digitally imaged based on collection needs and curatorial/user community expectations.
  • Write a Project Plan and Request for Proposals from vendors and evaluate proposal responses.
  • Develop and implement metadata schemas for your digital content.
  • Develop a quality assessment regime to ensure the quality of the digital imaging and content packaging.
  • Discuss options for managing your digital assets.

Course Description:
A successful digital imaging project doesn’t have to start with the purchase and set up of a camera or scanner. When creating digital content, keep the things that you can do efficiently within your library or archives. Outsource the things that are expensive, complex, and time consuming. Understanding how to design and manage an outsourced digital imaging project can be an efficient way to focus funds on the creation of digital content that meets the needs of your user community both now and into the future.

Intended Audience:
Librarian or collection curator at a library of archives that does not have an in-house digital imaging facility and who is planning to digitally image collections, but is unsure of how to begin a planning process with limited funding.

David Walls is the Preservation Librarian for the US Government Publishing Office, where he brings more than 25 years of experience in both digital and tangible preservation to the task of developing and managing strategic initiatives for the Preservation of Federal Government Information for the American public.
