Fundamentals of Cultural Heritage Digitization

SC01

Instructor: Thomas Rieger, Library of Congress
Level: Introductory
Duration: 4 hours
Course Date/Time: Monday, June 19 8:00 AM - 12:15 PM

Benefits:
This course enables the attendee to:

  • Provide a framework to understand the importance of cultural heritage digitization in the context of the modern era.
  • Provide a conceptual “360” of how digitization programs fit into the academic, non-profit, library, archive, and museum communities and cultures.
  • Define the role of a professional digitization practicioner and how that is dramatically different than the classic definition of a librarian, while at the same time it embraces the same fundamentals.

Course Description:
This course provides an overview of the essential elements required to develop and implement a successful digitization program specific to the needs of cultural heritage institutions, including libraries, archives, museums, and service providers in the non-profit and commercial environments.

Beginning with an analysis of the essential elements that make up all cultural heritage digitization programs, this course provides essential context and understanding of the complexities—and sometimes the simplicities—involved. Discussion topics include the scope of cultural heritage digitization; defining objectives; setting quality expectations; designing an imaging lab; understanding human vision perception; the basics of color management, both theory and practice; administration and production management; and looking toward the future.

Intended Audience:
Anyone participating in the development or operation of a cultural heritage digitization program.

Thomas Rieger is manager of digitization services at the Library of Congress, editor of the 2016 FADGI Technical Guidelines, and a member of ISO Photography Technical Committees. Rieger was previously director of imaging services at NEDCC, and an industry consultant.
