ATTENTION: We're pleased to announce that EI 2021 will be fully online! We recognize that one of the most important features of attending EI is interacting with colleagues from Industry and Academia. We are committed to making community connection a priority and to providing ample opportunities to meet and discuss personally with others. We see the move to an online platform as an opportunity for greater numbers of people to join from around the world. Join us on this exciting adventure . . . submit your work today!

Conference Overview

We live in a visual world. The perceived quality of images is of crucial importance in industrial, medical, and entertainment application environments. Developments in camera sensors, image processing, 3D imaging, display technology, and digital printing are enabling new or enhanced possibilities for creating and conveying visual content that informs or entertains. Wireless networks and mobile devices expand the ways to share imagery and autonomous vehicles bring image processing into new aspects of society.

The power of imaging rests directly on the visual quality of the images and the performance of the systems that produce them. As the images are generally intended to be viewed by humans, a deep understanding of human visual perception is key to the effective assessment of image quality.

This conference brings together engineers and scientists from industry and academia who strive to understand what makes a high-quality image, and how to specify the requirements and assess the performance of modern imaging systems. It focuses on objective and subjective methods for evaluating the perceptual quality of images, and includes applications throughout the imaging chain from image capture, through processing, to output, printed or displayed, video or still, 2D or 3D, virtual, mixed or augmented reality, LDR or HDR.

2021 Special Sessions

For Image Quality and System Performance XVIII, submissions are particularly encouraged for the planned mobile image quality and immersive applications sessions.

Industry Perspectives on Mobile Image Quality

Session Organizing Chair:
Elaine Jin, Intuitive Surgical (United States)

The IQSP Industry Perspectives on Mobile Image Quality special session aims to provide a snapshot of the image quality practices and challenges in the mobile imaging industry today. The invited speakers are image quality experts from the world’s leading mobile device manufacturers. The topics will include mobile phone image quality trends, video and still image quality issues, and mobile ecosystem considerations.

Quality of Immersive Applications

Session Organizing Chair:
Mylène C.Q. Farias, University of Brasilia (Brazil)

The advancement of imaging technologies in the last decade has allowed more faithful representations of the physical world and, therefore, has enabled the creation of better immersive experiences in Virtual/Augmented/Mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) applications. More specifically, these technology advancements have driven the production of plenoptic devices that are able to capture and display volumetric visual data that describe the geometry (shape, size, position in 3D-space) and attributes (e.g., color, opacity, reflectance) of a 3D scene and objects. Depending on the capturing device, the content can be holograms, light fields, or point clouds (PC) imaging formats. Naturally, several technological challenges have emerged for each one of imaging formats and the corresponding application. Among these challenges is understanding and measuring the quality of experience (QoE) of these new applications and services. This special session tackles the problems of quality of immersive applications, focusing on efficient processing, visual attention, and quality assessment methodologies for light fields, 360° content, point clouds, and/or volumetric video.
