The IS&T Standards Program and ISO/TC42 Photography

International Standards - ISO/TC42

In January 2011, IS&T and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) formed a partnership to enhance the development of industry standards for photography. As part of that agreement, ANSI now serves as the Secretariat for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 42 (TC42) Photography.

Created in 1947, more than 170 international photography-related standards have been developed by ISO/TC42 over the years. These include ISO 5800, for measuring the ISO speed of color negative films; ISO 18921, for evaluating the life expectancy of optical discs; and ISO 15740, for communicating with digital cameras. Another feature of the IS&T/ANSI partnership is that ANSI now administers the US Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) to ISO/TC42. The US TAG, which is responsible for providing technical experts and determining the US position on ISO/TC42 standards, is organized into Imaging Technology (IT) Committees with specific areas of focus:

Get Involved

Participation on an IT Committee is open to experts representing organizations, companies, and government agencies, as well as to individuals affected by the work undertaken by the committees. Qualified organizations, companies, and individuals willing to actively participate in standards development are encouraged to join one or more IT Committee(s) in their area(s) of interest. Annual dues, billed on a calendar year, are required from all participants for each IT Committee on which they serve. The dues structure reflects a participant's specific classification:

  • Individual Expert
    $150/year/per IT committee
  • Non-profit Association, Professional Society or University
    $500/year/per IT committee
  • Professional Consultant
    $750/year/per IT committee
  • Small Company
    (< $100M annual revenue)
    $1,750/year/per IT committee
  • Medium Company
    ($100-$500M annual revenue)
    $4,000/year/per IT committee
  • Large Company
    (>$500M annual revenue)
    $8,500/year/per IT committee

ISO/TC42 Plenary

Every two years, ISO/TC42 holds a plenary. All members of ISO/TC42 are eligible to attend. In 2011, the 22nd plenary was hosted by Eastman Kodak Company and the Rochester Institute of Technology. It took place in Rochester, NY, from June 6 - 10. The 23rd plenary will be hosted by Danish Standards in Copenhagen, Denmark from June 3 - 7, 2013. Further details will become available at a later time.

The IS&T Standards Management Board

The IS&T Standard Management Board (SMB) provides oversight for the IS&T Standards Program. While direct administration of the Secretariat and the US TAG is provided by ANSI staff, the SMB (through its quarterly meetings) continues to offer operational guidance in relation to the agreement between IS&T and ANSI.

About ISO and the TC42 Working Groups

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, ISO is a network of national standards bodies of many countries. There are eleven participating member countries (P-members), in ISO/TC42: Belgium (NBN), China (SAC), Denmark (DS), Germany (DIN), Japan (JISC) Republic of Korea (KATS), Russian Federation (GOST R), Sweden (SIS), Switzerland (SNV), the United Kingdom (BSI), and the United States (ANSI). P-members may assign multiple experts to participate in ISO/TC42 work, but each P-member has one vote on ISO standards ballots. A working group (WG) is responsible for standards development in a specific technical area. For ISO/TC42, WG's include:

  • WG3 Sensitometry, image measurement and viewing
  • WG4 Mechanical elements of photographic equipment
  • WG5 Physical properties and image permanence of photographic materials
  • WG6 Photographic chemicals and processing
  • WG18 Electronic still picture imaging

In addition, ISO/TC42 participates in numerous joint working groups with other ISO and IEC technical committees:

  • WG8 Photographic film and paper dimensions
  • WG17 Dental films
  • JWG20 Digital camera color characterization
  • WG21 Density measurement
  • JWG22 Color management
  • WG23 Extended color encoding
  • WG24 Viewing conditions for photography and graphic technology
  • WG25 Use of XMP for digital photography
  • WG26 Imaging system capability qualification for archival recording and approval

About the SMB

The SMB is responsible for providing the oversight and funding of (i) the IT Committees and (ii) the administration (in association with ANSI,) of the ISO/TC42 Secretariat and the US TAG. The SMB operates according to the SMB Standard Operating Procedures, which it has developed and approved. Per the SMB Standard Operating Procedures, each member of the SMB has one vote.

Daryl Hunt (Eastman Kodak Company) is the SMB Chairperson.

Other SMB Members include:

  • The Chairperson (or other designated member) of each IT Committee
  • A representative nominated by each SMB company member
  • Representatives nominated by an organization, professional society or other materially affected group
