Since its inception in 1889 during the early years of photography, the International Congress of Imaging Science (ICIS) has provided an opportunity for imaging scientists and technologists worldwide to come together to review important progress in the field from the previous three to four years, as well as to share insights about future directions. ICIS ’06, the 30th Congress in the series, comes at a time when the world of images and image applications is rapidly expanding. The Congress differs from other imaging conferences in that it encompasses all aspects of imaging technologies; the resulting breadth of subject areas covered and diversity of participants make it a unique forum for sharing the latest advances in imaging, no matter the topic.

Highlights of ICIS ‘06 include:
  • A four-track Technical Program covering image capture, display, output, and the underlying image science, featuring more than 200 papers in 17 sessions. The four tracks are Track 1: Digital and Analog Image Capture: Systems and Materials; Track 2: Hardcopy and Photographic Printing: Systems and Media; Track 3: Image Science; and Track 4: Display Technologies. Oral presentations will start on Monday afternoon and continue until noon on Wednesday. Interactive presentations will be held Thursday from noon to 2pm. Several sessions are complemented by invited papers ensuring that all key technology activities are represented.
  • A comprehensive Tutorial Program of 19 short courses taught by imaging experts on a wide variety of subjects. Tutorials offered during ICIS ’06 have been chosen from among the most successful and popular courses offered by IS&T. The Tutorial Program takes place all day Sunday and Wednesday afternoon. Detailed course descriptions begin on page 5.
  • Five plenary addresses given by international industry leaders and scientific experts. ICIS ’06 begins Monday morning with a plenary session featuring Pierre Schaeffer, chief marketing officer & vice president, Consumer Digital Imaging Group, Eastman Kodak Company; Glenn Kennel, director of technology development, DLP Cinema® Products, Texas Instruments; Sid Dalal, vice president and center manager of Imaging and Services Technology Center (ISTC), Xerox Corp.; and Kai Thomenius, chief technologist, Imaging Technologies Organization, GE Global Research. James Crocker, vice president, Civil Space, Lockheed Martin, will present a fifth plenary address on Wednesday afternoon at at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
  • ICIS at RIT,” a special Wednesday afternoon event sponsored by the Center for Imaging Science Industrial Associates. Congress participants will be bussed to RIT where they can tour state-of-the-art research facilities and view a variety of printing equipment. A panel discussion on the future of imaging and a plenary lecture on space explorations are among the highlights of this special afternoon. Congress participants are also invited to a reception celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Center for Imaging Science, and to review RIT student poster presentations.
  • Frontiers in Imaging,” an all-day symposium of 12 invited lectures. This exciting program takes place on Thursday.
  • An exciting Social Program, featuring the George Eastman House Congress Reception/Buffet held Tuesday evening. In addition, you will have the opportunity to network with colleagues at the Sunday-evening Ice Breaker and the Rochester Institute of Technology Reception on Wednesday. A special tour of Niagara Falls on Friday (see page 3) and spouse registrations are also available for an additional fee.

We look forward to seeing you in Rochester!
