IntroductionFor the 12th year in a row, color scientists, engineers and technologists — everyone with an interest in color imaging—will gather in Scottsdale, Arizona for the IS&T/SID Color Imaging Conference (CIC). Their participation has made this the premier conference for color imaging. Both the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) and the Society for Information Display (SID) are pleased that this conference has met a great need in the technical community, and has established itself as the place to meet professionals working in the area of color and imaging. If you are a scientist or engineer working in the areas of color science, color engineering or color imaging, then we invite you to attend CIC-12. The CIC traditionally has attracted a diverse set of papers — all tied together by the theme of color and color images. This year’s conference will feature sessions on psychophysics, perception and quality, color constancy, standards, computer vision, displays, image processing, multi-spectral and multi-primary systems, high dynamic range imaging, color characterization and colorants. It is this broad mix of professional interests that is the hallmark of the conference. The Technical Papers Program will continue in the single-track format as in past years, so that everyone can learn from each other. We are pleased to continue our tradition of starting each day’s session with a keynote address. This year’s keynote speakers are Prof. Cynthia Brewer on color in maps; Prof. Kevin Parker on color in medical imaging; and Dr. Nagaaki Ohyama on the Natural Vision concept. In addition, this year we have reserved one session for late-breaking news; see the mini-call for papers for this session below. For presentations that benefit from a closer scrutiny of image results, there is the interactive/poster session, always a highlight of the conference. The poster session authors will introduce their work through two-minute oral “spotlight” talks, which will be followed by the traditional conference-wide poster display session that has proved so successful in the past at encouraging interactions among authors and attendees. For those who may be starting in the field of color imaging or looking for a refresher course, then we can recommend the conference’s tutorial program. This year we offer a strong five-track program - you may choose to follow a single track all day long or personalize your course program to meet your own educational needs. In addition, this year we are pleased to offer again the special two-day tutorial on basic color science and applied color imaging taught by Dr. R. W. G. Hunt, one of the most distinguished names in the field of color. Special events are planned as well. On Tuesday evening, we will have the icebreaker reception. The Conference Reception will be held Wednesday evening. On Thursday evening, we will feature a talk on the Mars Exploration Rover mission. For many of us, the CIC is the main opportunity each year to meet colleagues working in different fields of color imaging in places all over the world. If you have attended the conference in the past, we look forward to seeing you again. If you haven’t been to the CIC, then we invite you to make CIC-12 your first. See you in Scottsdale.
