IS&T Working Group on Preservation
and Policy in the Digital Culture

12:00 - 1:30 pm, Friday, April 23, 2004

The IS&T is sponsoring a new Working Group on "Preservation and Policy in the Digital Culture." The Working Group is being formed to address the perceived gap between the current policies for preservation and use, which are based on physical documents, and the policies that are needed for a world that deals more and more with digital documents.

Among the areas to be addressed are the social/cultural dimensions of appraising and accessing archived works; legal and commercial concerns in copyright tracking; cataloguing challenges of authentication, provenance, and preservation; and digital access policies for archive resource locators, certification, security, and interfaces.

To kickoff the Working Group, the IS&T is hosting a roundtable on Friday, April 23. The roundtable will bring together stakeholders who face these issues daily in their work with digital documents and who are committed to developing solutions. Already individual organizations and institutions are developing local solutions to their particular problems. Some of these will be featured in brief presentations at the roundtable. The Working Group aims to build on this work and map the path forward with the stakeholders.

The goal of the Working Group is to establish a set of Recommended Practices that all can use as guidelines for the acquisition, preservation and use of digitally based intellectual property. We anticipate that these Recommended Practices will initially guide the development of digital archiving business processes and work practices, and ultimately inform the design and implementation of archiving storage and access systems.

Those interested in contributing to the Working Group and committing to its goal should contact Calva Leonard, Executive Director of the IS&T, at the Conference Registration Desk during the conference or via e-mail at info@imaging.org.
